ROCIS Flight Parameters and Range Information
General Information:
- For the figures shown below, we used 4 flight takeoff/landing spots (small regional airports): Key West, FL; Fort Myers, FL; Cozumel, Mexico; Houma, LA. For the MASTR experiment, we only consider flights that take off from Cozumel and land at Cozumel.
- Maximum extended-tank range: 800 nmi; Nominal range (for MASTR experiment): 650 nmi.
- Flight duration: Between 4 hours and 5.75 hours
- Plane speed: 140 kt
- Cruising altitude: 7000 ft
- 1 flight per day
Note: The range of 800 nmi is not consistent with 140 kt plane speed and 5 hr flights (700 nmi). Similarly, the nominal range of 650 nmi is not consistent with 140 kt speed for 4 hours (560 nmi). So we have the following possible ranges:
- 140 kt for 4 hr = 560 nmi (first row of plots in each table)
- Nominal range of 650 nmi (second row)
- 140 kt for 5 hr = 700 nmi (third row)
- Maximum extended-tank range = 800 nmi (fourth row)
For our initial planning, two types of flight paths are considered: Equilateral triangle paths, with side length R/3 nmi (R is the range), and out-and-back paths, each of length R/2 nmi.
