Drifter Deployment Forecasts Maximizing Mutual Information (Greedy Approach with Reachability)

The most informative drifter locations are obtained by maximizing mutual information among the candidate drifter trajectories and the forward FTLE field from 14 Z to 20 Z on Aug 07, 2018, around No Man's Land (within the pink box marked in row 2). Drifters are released every 15 minutes. Only those locations reachable by the ship at it's nominal speed and lying within the pink box (see row 2 in the first table) are considered. - A total of 5 drifter release locations/times are proposed, optimized using mutual information and a greedy algorithm.

In this case, we consider the drifter deployment releases to be independent of each other. The most informative drifter locations are then obtained by maximizing mutual information among the candidate drifter trajectories at a given time instance and the forward FTLE field from 14 Z to 20 Z on Aug 07, 2018, around No Man's Land (within the pink box marked in row 2). The mutual information fields corresponding to such independent drifter deployments are shown for every 30 mintures from 14Z to 15Z on Aug 07, 2018.
