We have revised the mini-HOPS domains. Originally three over-lapping domains were defined, spanning a high-resolution sampling pattern (below, left). The problem is the canyon which lies too close to the northern boundary of the central domain. This feature introduced instabilities that lead to a CFL violation in 7 time steps. To avoid this, the 3 domains were replaced with 2 larger over-lapping domains (below, right).
Note that these revised domains require no modification to the sampling pattern.

The plan is to run the Regional Domain in a 2-way nested configuration with a Super-Mini HOPS domain. The Super-Mini HOPS has the same resolution as the minis, but extends in to the coast (resolving any coastal currents) and out ~5km beyond the minis (buffer zone to adjust the coarser Regional physics). The initial and evolving boundary conditions for the Mini-HOPS domains are taken from the Super-Mini HOPS domain. Interpolation issues are by-passed by having the Mini-HOPS domains collocated with the Super-Mini.
