To the right are the proposed Harvard modeling domains for PLUSnet-05, overlying a 1 minute topography used in our previous Corsican Channel work and the GSHHS coastlines. Included on the figure is an outline of the primary working area (green).

The Harvard domains (outlined in white) are a pair 2-way nestable grids and a smaller 1-way nesting domain. The basic rational for these domain are:

Elba (Largest)
A domain covering the approaches to Pianosa out as far as Elba. This domain encompasses all possible sampling.
Extended-Mini (Middle)
A domain centered on the Mini-HOPS domain but extended out about 2.5km. This domain is 2-way nested in the Elba domain and provides adjusted, high resolution initial & boundary conditions for the Mini-HOPS domain.
Mini-HOPS (Smallest)
A 10km domain centered on the primary activity area. Designed for fast execution and ESSE compatability.

Speed estimates are made by comparing the grid sizes against 2 different experiments that were run with the given time steps.

A quick review of the real-time GOATS/MEANS 2000, ASCOT-02, and the reanalysis of the MREA03/BP03 experiments revealed

These observations suggested shifting the Mini-HOPS domain to the East and stretching it in the North/South. Additionally, the absence of expected data in the western and southern regions of the Elba domain suggested retreating those boundaried as well. The resulting set of domains are displayed to the right, with domain descriptions and timing estimates given below.

A couple of the trade-offs in designing these domains:

  Elba Extended-Mini Mini-HOPS
Resolution 300m 100m 100m
Size nx × ny × nz 93×110×21 137×162×21 89×114×21

Speed dt=150s 30 minutes/(model day) 64 minutes/(model day) 30 minutes/(model day)
dt=300s 15 minutes/(model day) 33 minutes/(model day) 15 minutes/(model day)

Second-Alternate PLUSnet-05 modeling domains

A further review of the real-time GOATS/MEANS 2000, ASCOT-02, and the reanalysis of the MREA03/BP03 experiments has suggested a couple of changes to the Elba domain

  1. Extended further East to maintain more potential inflow.
  2. Extended further South to better isolate the primary domains of interest from recurring southern boundary noise.
