At MSEAS, Sophia created a closure model using Gaussian process to generate a prediction framework to improve the accuracy of ​low-fidelity models without requiring expensive high-fidelity models. Congratulations to Victoria Wahlig for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Towards a Novel Path-Planning Approach Using Acoustic Measurements to Reduce Ship Noise Pollution in Critical Marine Habitats." At MSEAS, Victoria investigated whether ships can reduce their acoustic impact by following optimized routes that avoid sensitive marine areas, using physical oceanography and mathematical modeling. As a visiting high school student from Falmouth High School (Falmouth, ME), Victoria successfully completed her 2025 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Amelie Chen for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Science of Autonomy: Optimal Path Planning." At MSEAS, Amelie optimized maritime navigation routes by using the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) partial differential equation to find time-optimal paths, considering factors like vessel speed, direction, setting, and oceanic conditions. The simulations created highlight the need for adaptive path planning to balance efficiency and fuel usage based on real-time environmental data. As a visiting high school student from Pacific Horizons School (Tutuila, American Samoa), Amelie successfully completed her 2024 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Kathy Nie for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Energy Optimal Path Planning for AUVs." At MSEAS, Kathy optimized the energy efficiency and path planning of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) by using real-time ocean current data to identify optimal routes, allowing these vehicles to cover larger areas with less energy. Through simulations, she demonstrated that AUVs can harness currents and solar energy, enhancing the sustainability of underwater exploration. As a visiting high school student from Timberline High School (Boise, Idaho), Kathy successfully completed her 2024 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Melody Yu for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Gaussian Closure Modeling for Fluid Dynamics." At MSEAS, Melody applied Gaussian closure modeling to simulate fluid flows, specifically applying sparse variational Gaussian processes to the idealized scenario of two-dimensional fluid flow past a cylinder obstacle. She then augmented a low-fidelity simulation with different discretizations of high-fidelity simulations. As a visiting high school student from Sage Hill School (Newport Coast, CA), Melody successfully completed her 2024 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Jason Youm for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "MSEAS-ParEq for Ocean Acoustic Modeling in the New England Seamount." At MSEAS, Jason analyzed ocean acoustic propagation behaviors in the complex New England seamounts region using the MSEAS-ParEq computer model. He sought out specific cross-sections with significant seafloor imbalances and a highly-varying sound speed profile in order to yield informative propagation results, then optimized the model to reduce runtimes while retaining the original accuracy. As a visiting high school student from Montgomery Blair High School (Silver Spring, MD), Jason successfully completed his 2024 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Discussing results and developing MATLAB simulations with my amazingly supportive mentor Marcoul were core memories I'll never forget. Thank you to Prof. Lermusiaux, Marcoul, and everyone at MSEAS for the invaluable opportunity and fantastic research experiences.

Congratulations to Bowen Yang for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Transformers for Fluid Closure Modeling." At MSEAS, Bowen explored neural closure modeling in fluid dynamics simulations. He developed a vision transformer-based deep ensemble approach to augment a low-fidelity simulation in order to improve its accuracy relative to a high-fidelity simulation, while maintaining lower computational cost. He focused on uncertainty quantification, evaluating our model’s performance and its ability to detect out-of-distribution flows with unfamiliar dynamics. As a visiting high school student from Cypress Woods High School (Cypress, Texas), Bowen successfully completed his 2024 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

MSEAS is super chill and fun to work in. Everyone is super nice and willing to help. Thanks to Anantha and Sanaa for always being there to help me get through my project!

Congratulations to Ahana Chakraborty for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Visualization Tools for Ocean Modelling." At MSEAS, Ahana worked with the 2D SeaVizKit, an interactive visualization tool that displays how a variety of scalar and vector quantities vary in different parts of the ocean. She looked into how the 2D SeaVizKit currently works, and then plotted the reachability set as an additional variable. As a visiting high school student from King's College London Mathematics School (London, England), Ahana successfully completed her 2024 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

I would like to thank my mentor Aditya, for all his support throughout my project, and Alonso for his advice and responses to my many questions. I would also like to thank my lab-mates Melody, Jason, Bowen, Kathy and Amelie for making the summer so memorable. From all the times we helped each other in the lab to our many discussions over lunch, you guys made RSI as amazing as it was.

Congratulations to Cayden Chik for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Towards an Optimized Numerical Sea Ice Model and Reduced Order Modeling for Forecasting". At MSEAS, Cayden developed efficient algorithms to allow safe navigation along the Arctic Sea Routes (ASR) while improving cryospheric modeling. He found an accurate and efficient solution to the highly nonlinear and stiff sea ice momentum equation, surpassing existing methods in performance. Additionally, Cayden created a reduced-order surrogate model using Dynamic Mode Decomposition, reducing computational costs while maintaining predictive accuracy. By leveraging on neural networks as a closure term, he hopes to develop an integrated methodology that combines the strengths of various techniques to produce fast and precise sea ice models. As a visiting high school student from Hwa Chong Institution (Singapore), Cayden successfully completed his 2023 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

This experience has been truly eye-opening and I’m immensely grateful for the amazing mentorship and guidance from Anantha. I’m looking forward to continuing my research at the lab and working alongside the many incredibly talented individuals at MSEAS.

Congratulations to Jason Teng for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Predictive Modeling of Red Tide Formation in the Gulf of Mexico Using Dynamic Mode Decomposition." At MSEAS, Jason deconstructed the complex dynamics of satellite imagery of red tide concentrations in the Gulf of Mexico from 2003-2019. Using a reduced-order model, known as Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), he analyzed the progression of time snapshots and predicted/forecasted upcoming occurrences of red tide formations. As a visiting high school student from Crescent School (Ontario, Canada), Jason successfully completed his 2023 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Working on this project was like stepping into the unknown, but having Alonso as a mentor made a huge difference. I'm glad that I got such an amazing and supportive mentor to teach me the concepts and open my eyes to new fields of study.

Congratulations to Ahmad Machmouchi for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Optimal Adaptive Sampling For Forecasting in The Gulf of Mexico." At MSEAS, Ahmad designed the best possible track for ROCIS flights, which aim to extract most beneficial data from the Gulf of Mexico for future forecasts. As a visiting high school student from Hariri High School II (Beirut, Lebanon), Ahmad successfully completed his 2023 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

A huge thank you for the mentors and MSEAS people who helped me in a field I was uncomfortable with. The experience was phenomenal! Even if the moments ended, the memories will forever stay.

Congratulations to James Nagler for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on “2D Planar Decomposition for Time-Series Machine Learning Models." At MSEAS, James investigated 2D planar decomposition as an alternative to the Fourier transform in FourCastNet, a machine learning model that predicts the ocean’s behavior. He found that the planar decomposition for Legendre polynomials outperformed the Fourier transform in long-term predictions, helping contribute to a more accurate understanding of future ocean behavior. As a visiting high school student from Garden City High School, New York, James successfully completed his 2023 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Yazeed Albeladi for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Investigations into non-linear dynamic mode decomposition". At MSEAS, Yazeed looked into dynamic mode decomposition and its related techniques, particularly deep-learning enhanced dynamic mode decomposition (DLDMD). He tested DLDMD on a mean-field model of a fluid flow past a cylinder and analyzed the results. As a visiting high school student from Al-Aqeeq International School (Medina, Saudi Arabia), Yazeed successfully completed his 2023 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

It was a real pleasure working with MSEAS. I learned so much stuff I never imaged I'd know and worked with some of the most talented, driven people in the world. Thank you to all the folks at MSEAS for making this possible.

Congratulations to Qasim Ebsim for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Investigation of Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities using High-Order FEM." At MSEAS, Qasim worked on testing the limits of our in-house solver by simulating Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. He investigated the pertinent parameters and boundaries in order to simulate fluid dynamics at a small scale. He also examined how the relationship between buoyancy and viscosity effect the shape of the Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities which we characterize as the simulation's Ebsim's number. As a visiting high school student from Ashbury College (Ottawa, Canada), Qasim successfully completed his 2023 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Working at MSEAS was like a rollercoaster. Not a day went by that some progress was not made and I can only accredit that to my wonderful mentors, Aditya and Corbin, whose ideas and advice kept me going whenever I hit a wall. Thanks to all of MSEAS for the wonderful time and the great experience.

Congratulations to Jason Wang for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Dynamic Mode Decomposition: A Data Driven Reduced Order Modeling for Forecasting." Jason used Dynamic Mode Decomposition to forecast wind stress over the northern Atlantic Ocean. This creates a linear model out of high-dimensional data and tested different ways to improve the accuracy of the forecast. He specifically wanted to see whether incorporating data from a larger domain of the North Atlantic could improve predictions within a subdomain within the North Atlantic. As a visiting high school student from Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (Oklahoma City, OK), Jason successfully completed his 2022 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Keith Soong-Lin Chan for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "An Investigation of Nonhydrostatic Flows with a high-order Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Mode." At MSEAS, Keith performed a parametric study of nonhydrostatic flows with a cutting-edge Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) finite-element method for the solution of ocean dynamics. The results of this research will aid in the future construction and error prediction of coupled hydrostatic-nonhydrostatic ocean models. As a visiting student from Raffles Institution (Singapore), Keith successfully completed his 2022 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT. Keith thanks everyone at MSEAS and regards this chance to come to the lab and experience some of our work to having been an enlightening and life-changing opportunity. He thanks Corbin and Aditya for being such great and supportive mentors during his time here, as well as Anantha for entertaining the many questions regarding his field of work.

Congratulations to Sruthi Sentil for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Machine Learning-Informed Ocean Source Localization In An Ocean Waveguide Environment." At MSEAS, Sruthi created a machine-learning based pipeline to infer source depth parameters based on sparse pressure field observations. Multiple convolutional neural network architectures were trained on synthetic mode observations taken from a Monte Carlo simulation scenario. The trained model when tested on complex real-world ocean data should allow us to locate phenomena within the ocean. As a visiting high school student from Rickards High School (Tallahassee, FL), Sruthi successfully completed her 2022 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Marianne Liu for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on “Developing a deep learning algorithm for ocean acidification prediction in the Massachusetts Bay Area." At MSEAS, Marianne created a machine learning model that can be used in combination with existing physics and math simulations to create a more comprehensive ocean acidification prediction model. A neural network was created which predicts water nitrate levels when given three variables: water depth, temperature, and salinity. After optimizing the model, a mean absolute error of 6.570 μM was achieved, which is similar to other machine learning models in literature today. These promising results open the pathway to using deep learning more in the future in predicting ocean acidification. As a visiting high school student from West High School (Salt Lake City, UT), Marianne successfully completed her 2022 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Patrick Wahlig for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on “Towards a System for Modeling the Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Sea Scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) in Massachusetts Bay." At MSEAS, Patrick designed a computer program modeling the impacts of ocean acidification on shellfish growth in Massachusetts Bay, calibrating existing equations to local conditions. His findings display the critical role aragonite and physical dynamics play in influencing shellfish growth. By increasing the span of his runs, he hopes to create a system for real-time population assessment and warning detection to be implemented by aquaculture and fisheries management organizations across the coast. As a visiting high school student from Falmouth High School (Falmouth, ME), Patrick successfully completed his 2022 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

I'm happy to have gotten paired with such an amazing mentor and lab...the experience with Pat was life-changing.

Congratulations to Rishab Jain for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on “GlioMod: Spatiotemporal-Aware Glioblastoma Multiforme Tumor Growth Modeling with Deep Encoder-Decoder Networks." At MSEAS, Rishab proposed an encoder-decoder neural network model, GlioMod, which aims to learn spatiotemporal features of tumor concentration and brain geometry for personalized therapeutic planning. As a visiting high school student from Westview High School (Portland, OR), Rishab successfully completed his 2022 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Sophia Keniston for completing her MSRP poster on "Parameter Sensitivity Study on Non-Hydrostatic 2-D Subduction Dynamics". At MSEAS, Sophia investigated the effect of wind and diffusivity parameters on subduction dynamics in the Alboran Sea. As a visiting student from Sweet Briar College (Virginia), Sophia successfully completed her 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Ashwin Sivakumar for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Using Neural Closure Techniques to Simplify Lemming Population Models." At MSEAS, Ashwin utilized a delay differential equation-based neural network framework previously developed at MSEAS to augment a low-complexity, inaccurate ordinary differential equation model for lemming population cycles in the Arctic. The goal of this effort was to approximate the dynamics of a higher-complexity and much more accurate model without compromising simplicity. This is the first application of this technique to terrestrial ecology. As a visiting high school student from Flintridge Preparatory High School (La Canada Flintridge, CA), Ashwin successfully completed his 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Nevan Lim for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on “Effects of Density-Based Subduction on Ocean Mixing and Internal Waves". At MSEAS, Nevan performed parameter sensitivity studies for numerous factors that affect subduction within the Alboran Sea by modifying the magnitude of these factors in a 2D model and analyzing the resulting simulation output. The model was constructed in MATLAB and the simulations were conducted using parallel computing as well as Shell Scripting. The results of his research will aid in the construction of more accurate and complex ocean models in the future that account for the realistic variations of these factors across space and time. As a visiting high school student from Nanyang Junior College (Singapore), Nevan successfully completed his 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Camilla Martinez for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Energy-Time Optimal Path Planning in Realistic Ocean Settings." At MSEAS, Camilla investigated the application of realistic vehicle parameters to the energy-time optimal path planning algorithm and used her findings to conduct simulations in a realistic dynamic ocean environment. As a visiting high school student from North Hollywood High School (North Hollywood, CA), Camilla successfully completed her 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Anya Zhang for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Interactive Ocean Visualization Using VAPOR". At MSEAS, Anya investigated the 3D visualization software VAPOR developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research in creating visualizations for the MSEAS sea exercises to better understand processes such as climate change and ocean acidification. Throughout the study, Anya also developed a unique data processing pipeline and conducted colormap comparisons. As a visiting high school student from Ed W. Clark High School (Las Vegas, NV), Anya successfully completed her 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Xiru "Cecilia" Hou for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on "Instantaneously Optimal Dynamic Video Compression". At MSEAS, Cecilia developed dynamic video compression in four ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithm. The four methods include: error drift elimination, colored video compression, frame combination, and intra-frame coding. As a visiting high school student from High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (Beijing, China), Cecilia successfully completed her 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Aziz Hanafi for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on "Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Tumor: From MRI Scans to Model Simulations." At MSEAS, Aziz worked on implementing Image Processing in order to apply the mathematical model for tumor evolution into real life complex situations of tumors, thus the image processing tools were effective to provide the needed inputs of the brain tumor to the model, throughout his research the implementation of the model into a computational manner using real MRI scans combined with the implementation of Image Processing produced successful results. As a visiting high school student from the United World College Red Cross Nordic, Aziz successfully completed his 2021 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Youran “Yoland” Gao for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on “3DSeaVizKit: Interactive 3D Visualization Toolkit for Oceanographic Data". At MSEAS, Yoland developed a 3D (spatial) + 1 (temporal) visualization toolkit , the 3DSeaVizKit, that processes oceanographic simulations obtained by the MSEAS ocean model to create cohesive, portable and interactive 3D visualizations of the ocean. As a visiting high school student from Ocean Lakes High School (Virginia Beach, VA), Yoland successfully completed his 2020 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Erik Wang for completing his RSI summer report and presentation on “Numerical Modeling of Sea-Ice Dynamics and Thermodynamics.” Erik investigated numerous state-of-the-art numerical sea ice models to determine which would be best coupled to the MSEAS oceans model. He researched different rheologies by which the sea ice may evolve as well as how thermodynamics and ocean dynamics couple in order to predict how sea ice moves, melts, and changes with time. Using Monte Carlo simulations, Erik showed how perturbations on the incoming solar flux and the sea ice albedo affected long-term ice growth and melting. As a visiting high school student from Phillips Academy (Andover, MA), Erik successfully completed his 2020 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Amulya Pillutla for completing her RSI summer report and presentation on investigating techniques "Toward Effective, Insightful Visualization Tools for Ocean Physics ". At MSEAS, Amulya researched tools to make SeaVizKit, an in-house ocean visualization tool, faster, a feature of critical importance for real-time ocean applications. As a visiting high school student from Pleasant Valley High School (Bettendorf, IA), Amulya successfully completed her 2019 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Serena Zhao for completing her RSI summer report! Her presentation is titled "Targeting Marine Plastic Pollution with Numerical Data Modeling: Predicting Plastic Transport through Flow Map Composition." A rising high school senior from Manhasset, New York, Serena is extremely passionate about environmental conservation, future sustainability, and the Earth. She has researched areas spanning neurodegenerative disease to environmental engineering, but her primary interests lie in water use and conservation, especially of the oceans. Serena successfully completed her 2019 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Richard Beattie for completing his RSI summer investigating solving linear systems; his report and presentation is titled "Optimizing ILU and Block Preconditioning Methods for Sparse Finite Element Linear Operators". As a visiting high school student from Dublin, Ireland, Richard learned more numerical linear algebra than perhaps he ever wanted to, and successfully completed his 2019 summer research with the MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Chance Emerson for completing a summer internship with the MSEAS group as part of the Engineering Honors Program at St. Paul's School. Congratulations to Jordan Benjamin for completing his RSI report and presentation on “Effects of Typhoon Morakot river discharges on the coastal Taiwan ocean system.” As a visiting minority high-school student from Atlanta, Jordan successfully completed his 2014 summer research with our MSEAS group at MIT.

Congratulations to Abhinav Gupta from IIT Kanpur for completing his S. N. Bose Scholars Program with us this summer 2014. Abhinav completed original research on “Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling of Coupled Ocean Biological-Physical Dynamics” with our MSEAS group at MIT.

MIT undergraduates Grace Young and Teresa Hegarty developed lessons and educational drawings for middle and high school students about the role of technology in human's understanding and management of the ocean. These lessons and drawings were completed in spring 2014 and featured in the Mission 31 Skype-in-the-classroom curriculum.
For example, in the first 20-minute interactive lesson on "Why care about the ocean?", they discuss seven reasons why the ocean is important; it 1) covers 70% of earth's surface; 2) generates half the oxygen people breathe; 3) provides seafood; 4) is a place for recreation; 5) generates renewable energy; 6) transports 90% of goods to the US; 7) is a new frontier for discovery.
